Wikipedia takes about: “New Media Art” !
The difference is Means and Tradition. Means is the method and the application where tradition is the custom, the practice, the ritual and the belief. Means is something that can be overcome, but tradition means change and those steeped within it draw battle lines, especially when it comes to Originals.
Original Art is an idea, a concept, an expression that was formulated within an artist’s mind and was executed in some fashion.
This idea could have its birthplace in a variety of other concepts, ideas or expressions. Not a direct copy of something not an identifiable partial copy, it is an idea, a concept, an expression whose value and intrinsic beauty is a direct result of the artist. It might not be totally unique it may be something that has sprung forth from something else, but it is original.
Many would like to argue this. However, one has to ask themselves some questions. When cave paintings were applied to caves were they as original as painting on walls? Was the paint the same on walls as what was applied in doing a fresco? Did artists cheat when pigment was mixed with oils and stuffed in a tube that made it portable? Was an artist’s work original when woven linen called canvas was introduced? When photography was introduced and a picture capturing a moment in time was acquired, was it the same as an artist standing and painting a moment when the elements including light were in his mind perfect?
The argument has no validity! Original Art is Original Art! Original Paintings are Original Art Paintings!
When one wants to say that one of a kind is original, then does that mean that each man has lost his or her originality. Was Adam the only man? Adam was a unique, one of a kind individual? Just like every man and every woman, are they unique?. Are snowflakes original or are snowflakes unique?
If Adam was cloned would Adam have more value than Adam? Would the 300th Adam have more value than the 5th Adam?
The argument has nothing to do with original. It has to do with the number that was created and the value that is placed on each. Each piece stands on its own merit within its own category. One artist may choose to only paint a single paintting. One artist may choose to paint several paintings. Are they the same value? Is a print as valuable as a painting? Rather than value, maybe cost is the real issue?
The real value is related to the individual. What is valuable to one may not be valuable to another. When you are dealing with original artwork, original fine art, original art oil and oil painting artist the value has to be to the individual.
Find art that moves you, reminds you, stirs you, grips you. Find art you like, fall in love with it and let it speak volumes to you over time.
Through thousands of years of ritual and tradition two things have remained constant in the art world. The first is that the artist has an idea. The second is that there will be an output and the creation of something tangible. Digital Art is New Art as long as it is an artist’s idea and a tangible output.
